- 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter optional
Begin by peeling, coring, and slicing the apples into thin wedges. Place the apple slices in a large mixing bowl.
To the bowl of apple slices, add the sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and all-purpose flour. Toss the ingredients together until the apple slices are evenly coated with the mixture.
In a pot or skillet over medium heat, add the prepared apple mixture. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10-15 minutes, until the apples have softened but still hold their shape.
If desired, add in the unsalted butter during the last few minutes of cooking for extra flavor.
Remove the apple filling from heat and allow it to cool before using it in your favorite pie crust or storing it for later use.
This apple pie filling can be used immediately in a pie or can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
To freeze, let the filling cool completely, then transfer it to a freezer-safe container for up to three months. Thaw in the refrigerator before using.
