Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 9x13 inch casserole dish
  • 1 skillet
  • 1 cooking spoon
  • 1 oven mitts
  • 1 measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 large head cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 can diced tomatoes (15 oz each)
  • 1 can tomato sauce (15 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and boil the whole head in salted water for about 5-7 minutes, or until leaves are soft. Remove leaves and set aside.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with diced onion and minced garlic until the meat is no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
  • Add cooked rice, diced tomatoes (with liquid), tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper to the meat mixture. Stir to combine.
  • In a greased casserole dish, spread a thin layer of the meat and rice mixture on the bottom.
  • Take a cabbage leaf, place a generous scoop of the meat mixture inside, and roll it up, tucking in the sides. Place the rolled cabbage seam-side down in the casserole dish. Repeat until all the mixture is used.
  • Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the cabbage rolls, then pour 1 cup of water around the edges of the casserole for moisture.
  • Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  • After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, allowing the top to brown slightly.
  • Remove from the oven, let it sit for a few minutes, and serve warm.

Notes

For a vegetarian option, you can substitute the ground meat with lentils or a plant-based meat alternative.
Feel free to add extra vegetables like bell peppers or zucchini for added flavor and nutrition.
This casserole can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator, and it reheats well.
