Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 microwave-safe bowl
  • 1 rubber spatula or wooden spoon
  • 1 baking sheet
  • 1 parchment paper (optional)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (½ stick)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup festive candy or sprinkles (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare your workspace by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper for easier cleanup, if desired.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, and unsalted butter. Microwave on high for 30 seconds, then stir. Continue microwaving in 15-second intervals until the mixture is smooth and melted.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract into the melted mixture until well combined.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add the Rice Chex cereal and pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal. Gently fold to coat all the pieces evenly.
  • Transfer the coated mixture to a large resealable plastic bag or a clean large bowl. Add the powdered sugar and shake or toss until the cereal is well coated with the sugar.
  • Spread the coated cereal onto the lined baking sheet and, if desired, sprinkle with festive candy or sprinkles for a holiday touch.
  • Allow the puppy chow to cool for about 5 minutes, then break it into clusters.
  • Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Notes

You can customize this recipe by adding other mix-ins like mini marshmallows, crushed pretzels, or holiday-themed candies.
For a different flavor, consider using white chocolate instead of semi-sweet chocolate.
