- 2 large sweet onions Finely sliced.
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper Optional, for heat.
- 1 large egg Beaten.
- ½ cup milk
- vegetable oil For frying.
Slice the sweet onions finely and place them in a large mixing bowl.
In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and optional cayenne pepper. Mix well.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and milk until well combined.
Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and stir until just combined. Gently fold in the sliced onions until they are well coated in the batter.
In a frying pan or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
Using a spoon, drop spoonfuls of the onion batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until they are golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm.
Adjust the seasoning according to your taste preference. Add herbs or spices to enhance flavors.
These fritters can be served with dipping sauces like ranch, aioli, or hot sauce.
Leftover fritters can be reheated in an oven to regain their crispiness.
