Equipment

  • 1 large pot
  • 1 skillet
  • 1 colander
  • 1 measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 cutting board

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces pasta (such as penne or spaghetti)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 14 ounces canned diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  • Begin by boiling a large pot of salted water. Once boiling, add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for about 3-4 minutes, or until soft and translucent.
  • Add minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Stir in the canned tomatoes (with their juice), tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  • Add the cooked pasta to the skillet and toss until the pasta is well coated with the sauce. Heat for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  • Serve hot, optionally topping with grated Parmesan cheese.
