Equipment

  • 1 Baking sheet
  • 1 Parchment paper
  • 1 Saucepan
  • 1 Whisk or spoon
  • 1 Oven mitts
  • 1 Cutting board

Ingredients

  • 12 slices bacon
  • 1 cup unsalted butter 2 sticks
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 24 pieces saltine crackers or graham crackers
  • ½ cup chopped nuts pecans or walnuts for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp. Remove and drain on paper towels, then chop into small pieces.
  • In the same saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a gentle boil.
  • Stir in the maple syrup, vanilla extract, and sea salt. Continue to boil for 3 minutes without stirring, then remove from heat.
  • Place the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Evenly distribute the cooked bacon pieces over the crackers.
  • Pour the caramel mixture over the crackers and bacon, ensuring even coverage. Use a spatula to gently spread it if necessary.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the caramel is bubbly and slightly darkened.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool completely on the baking sheet before breaking into pieces.
  • If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts over the top while it's still warm and let them set with the caramel.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper to the caramel mixture for a spicy kick.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
Feel free to experiment with different types of nuts or even chocolate drizzles for variety.
