- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, diced (about 1 cup)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup beef broth or water
- 1 chopped jalapeño for heat (optional)
- to taste fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)
Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Add the diced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
Sprinkle the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and black pepper over the beef. Stir well to coat the meat with the spices.
Pour in the beef broth or water, and if using, add the chopped jalapeño. Stir and let simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken slightly.
Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
Remove from heat and serve warm, garnished with fresh cilantro if desired.
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and can be frozen for longer storage.
Feel free to adjust the spices according to your taste preference.
