Ingredients
  

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 onion diced
  • 4 cups fresh tomatoes, chopped or 2 cans of diced tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • fresh basil leaves for garnish optional

Instructions
 

  • In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the minced garlic and diced onion to the pan. Sauté for about 5 minutes, until the onion becomes translucent.
  • Stir in the chopped fresh tomatoes (or canned tomatoes), sugar, salt, black pepper, dried basil, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Allow it to cook for about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings if necessary.
  • Serve the sauce over your favorite cooked pasta, garnished with fresh basil leaves if desired.

Notes

This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. It also freezes well, making it a convenient option for meal prep. Feel free to customize the sauce with additional vegetables, like bell peppers or mushrooms, for added flavor and nutrition.
